WELCOME

10 Minutes Maths Practice is a simple but effective way for primary school children to learn the basic maths skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The program includes a series of workbooks they can complete at their own pace, away from the pressure of the classroom environment. Just 10 minutes or 1 – 2 pages of practise per day will help your child to build confidence and expertise with these four fundamental arithmetic skills.

10 Minutes Maths Practice allows children to consolidate the maths taught in the classroom by focussing on repetition of the basic skills. There are two to three books in each of the four areas so as your child’s skills improve they can continue to practise maths at a level that suits them.

Help your child to succeed with everyday maths simply through regular practise.

About Us

My name is Rose, Director and Founder of 10 Minutes Maths Practice and a mum of three. When my first child was in his final years at primary school I realised that he and his peers were still struggling with basic maths skills – their times tables and simple mental arithmetic. Once at high school they would need to use these basic maths skills to solve more advanced maths problems.

Although I was working and had a family to manage I knew that something had to be done if I didn’t want my son to fall behind or end up thinking he was not good at maths. That’s when I began creating basic maths worksheets that my son could complete just before leaving for school, in the car or whenever we had 10 minutes or so to spare.

Over a relatively short period of time my son’s basic maths skills improved. I continued to use the worksheets with my two younger children with similar results. Then in 2009 in response to requests from other parents for my worksheets I developed the 10 Minutes Maths Practice program.

"Maths is easy when your child knows the basics by heart"

Facts

Dear Parents

Do you want to…

  • Help your child to be confident
  • Help your child to be smarter
  • Help you child to be happy
  • Help your child to be a success

Do you know…

Over 50% of primary school maths consists of numerical work and calculations.  The key to ensuring that children master this area is practice. Students will be more likely to lose motivation as they get older if they struggled with maths in primary school.

It is very important you child have an understanding of mathematical concepts, which is best learned by repeated practice. Rote Learning* is the easiest way to learn and often the only way to learn something.

*Rote learning is a learning technique which focuses on memorization. The major practice involved in rote learning is learning by repetition. The idea is that one will be able to quickly recall the meaning of the material the more one repeats it.

Start with small steps to master basic maths skills. This is the key to being a high achiever.

Which level does your child belong to?

  1. Incompetent Level – not performing at all
  2. Beginner Level – doing some sums very slowly and often inaccurately
  3. Master Level – doing very well in unlimited time
  4. Fluent Level – doing very well accurately in limited time
Questions

What is Fluency and why is it so important ?

Fluency is a fundamental standard in successful learning.  A professional golfer said he practised by hitting 4000 balls a day. Like a successful sports person, successful students will read and comprehend questions quickly and correctly and calculate answers quickly and accurately. The struggling students fail to understand problems and perform basic maths with hesitation even using their fingers to calculate. When your child lacks fluency in basic skills, performance requiring these skills will be slow, difficult and full of errors.

How Can you help child to achieve a fluent level  ?

Practice is the most important key.  Focused repetitive practice of important basic skills is absolutely necessary for a achieving this great goal.

What can you expect for your child from 10 Minutes Maths Practice Workbooks ?

  • Your child will…
  • understand concepts of the four arithmetic functions
  • will master addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • build strong Foundation, Accuracy, Speed & Technique from repeated practice
  • achieve fluent level in performing high skill maths
  • improve cognitive abilities (necessary mental skills for success in life) from regular exercise

How much of time will it take ?

10Minutes Maths Practice workbooks are designed so that children can work through the worksheets with minimal help from parents.  They can do the exercises before breakfast, after school or whilst in the car, it only takes 10 minutes or less.

I’m not good with maths ?

You don’t need to be good at maths. 10 Minutes Maths Practice workbooks cover the basic skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, the skills most adults use every day and all the answers for the worksheets canbe located at the back of the workbook.

Why do children need these skills when they can just use a calculator ?

Calculators are great, but children still need good basic skills to check their answers and for some high school maths tests where calculators are not permitted.

So do you still really think they don’t have to know how to do calculation ?

Why Should my child use 10 Minutes Maths Practice when he is getting good results using a computer based maths program ?

10 Minutes Maths Practice worksheets require children to calculate the answers to problems for themselves using pen and paper.  They not only learn the answers to everyday sums, they practice calculating the answers.  Showing how they worked out a mathematical problem is an important habit to learn for success in maths tests.  Used in conjunction with 10 Minutes Maths Practice, computer based programs are a great way to motivate your child to practice maths.

When can I expect to see results ?

Practicing with the 10 Minute Maths Program workbooks for as little as 5-10 minutes per day will help your child develop good basic maths skills that they will need for success in other subjects across the school cirriculum.

What if my child thinks the workbooks look boring ?

when parents compare workbooks to computer based programs they often think their children will find them boring. However, when we tested the worksheets on children and timed them to encourage speedier calculations they found the challenge” exciting.

What if my child hates maths ?

Often when children do not enjoy maths it is because they find it difficult. 10 Minutes MathsPractice helps children to learn how to calculate maths problems fast and accurately, this success boosts their confidence and they begin to enjoy the subject.

I don’t have much money ?

Almost everything is expensive these days.  You’re not going to be happy after you have spent a lot of money only to see the books sitting unused on the shelf – believe me, I’ve been there! 10Minutes Maths Practice workbooks will be used and they are.  Workbooks can be purchased for as little as $12.00 each (plus a small postage fee).  You can simply start with one book and then purchase additional books as your child progresses through the series – It is really simple!

Achievement Award

In recognition for all your child’s hard work in completing each 10 Minutes Maths Practiceworkbook, we will include an “Achievement Award” request form.  As the parent, you simply complete the details on the form and either email or post to the address provided and we’ll be delighted to post a personalised Achievement Award to your child – there are 9 to collect.

SUBTRACTION 2

Subtraction 2 begins with revision of subtraction in the number sentence format.  It then introduces the vertical format used for subtraction of numbers with two to four digits.  The importance of the concept of number place value is reinforced ie. that numbers increase in value from right to left and must be vertically aligned as follows:

Place values

  • Thousands / Hundreds / Tens / Ones
  •                              6                   5           9
  •                 –           1                   7           9

Subtraction 2 also provides practise in taking from the next higher place value column to calculate answers where the top digit is smaller than the bottom digit, e.g.

  • Ones : 9 – 9 = 0
  • Tens : 5 is smaller than 7 so to calculate the answer 1 must be taken from the tens column.  The 5 then becomes 15 so the sum is now 15 – 7 = 8
  • Hundreds : 6 has given 1 to the tens column so now there is only 5 left  so the sum is 5 – 1 = 4
  • When the individual digits are positioned in the correct place value the answer is 480

Daily practise will help your child:

  • to learn that subtraction of numbers with two or more digits must be carried out from right to left
  • to learn that numbers must be correctly aligned in order to calculate the correct answer
  • to understand the importance of number place value

ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION

This workbook revises simple addition and subtraction and introduces more advanced questions.

Horizontal Addition Practice

Your child may still be using their fingers to calculate the answer to number sentences such as 18 + 2 = 20.  At this stage you can encourage your child to use other strategies to calculate answers such as remembering the large number  (18) and counting on using the small number (+2).  You can also explain to your child that when adding they can swap the position of the numbers to calculate the answer faster e.g. 6 + 4 is the same as 4 + 6.

Vertical addition practice

The vertical addition questions focus on the importance of number place value i.e. ones lined up below ones (units), tens underneath tens and hundreds underneath hundreds and so on.  Completing these units gives your child practice at the more advanced step of maintaining number place value while ‘carrying over’, for example

  •   3  8         Always start from the ones (far right hand side), 8 + 2 = 10
  • +    2        ” 0 ” goes under the ones and ” 1 ” goes on the top of tens  ” 3 ”  so 1 + 3 =4
  •   4  0        so the answer is 40

Vertical subtraction practice

The questions in these units also focus on number place value.  They provide practice in taking from the next number in order to calculate the answers to subtraction sums that contain multiple  ” 0 ”  s.

  •    1 0 0 0          When the top number is smaller than the bottom number by place value, each
  • –    2  7 9           place has to take from one higher place value than its own value.
  •      7   2 1           Working from right to left when 1 is right to left when 1 is taken from                                             the next higher value column it has a value of 10
  • Ones (units)  :  take from the tens
  • Tens  :  take from the hundreds
  • Hundreds  :  take from the thousands

How this works

  • Ones : 10 – 9 = 1
  • Tens : 9 – 7 = 2 (10 taken from hundreds but 1 given to ones)
  • Hundreds : 9 – 2 = 7 (10 taken from thousands but 1 given to tens)
  • Thousands : 1 taken so nothing is left in this place value
  • When all individual sums are positioned underneath their place value the answer is 721

Daily practice will help your child:

  • to hold number in their short term memory
  • to learn the skill of counting on from numbers greater than 10
  • to learn that subtraction of numbers with two or more digits must be carried out from right to left
  • to learn that numbers must be correctly aligned in order to calculate the correct answer
  • to understand the importance of number place value

Summary of Contents

  • 80 units of two to multiple digit horizontal and vertical addition and subtraction practice
  • Answers to each unit
  • Suitable for 7 to 12 year olds
